The Second Birth
Upanayanam (Sanskrit: upa = near + nayana = bringing, vision; 'bringing near [to the teacher]' or 'second vision/birth') is the rite of initiation performed for boys of the twice-born (dvija) varṇas, typically between ages 7–12. The ceremony marks the beginning of the student phase (brahmacārya) of life and the formal beginning of Vedic study.
The Ceremony
In the upanayanam, the boy:
- Receives the yajñōpavītam (sacred thread)
- Is formally 'adopted' as a student by the officiating teacher
- Receives the gāyatrī mantra (the Vedic mantra par excellence)
- Performs his first sandhyāvandana (twilight prayer)
Relation to Pañca-saṃskāra
In the Śrī Vaiṣṇava tradition, upanayanam is a prerequisite for the pañca-saṃskāra initiation into the sampradāya. The upanayanam establishes Vedic standing; the pañca-saṃskāra establishes Śrī Vaiṣṇava identity. Both together complete the formal entry of a dvija into the full Śrī Vaiṣṇava practice lineage.
