Udayavar

உடையவர்

Also known as: udayavar, emperumanar ramanuja, ilaya perumal

Meaning

A Tamil honorific title for Ramanujacharya — meaning 'the owner/lord' or 'He who has all.' Expresses the tradition's recognition that Ramanuja 'owned' or held the entire sampradaya together — organizing worship, philosophy, and practice into a coherent whole.

Detailed Explanation

Udayavar — The Lord (of the Sampradāya)

Udayavar (Tamil: உடையவர் — 'the one who has/owns, the lord') is one of the most characteristic titles for Rāmānujācārya in the Teṉkalai Śrī Vaiṣṇava tradition. While 'Emperumānār' ('our Lord') expresses his transcendent status, 'Udayavar' ('the possessor/owner') emphasizes his role as the one who 'possessed' — organized, consolidated, and stewarded — the entire sampradāya.

Rāmānuja's Stewardship

The title accords with the tradition's remembrance of Rāmānuja as the great steward of the sampradāya. He strengthened the religious and administrative life of Śrīraṅgam, systematized Viśiṣṭādvaita in works such as the Śrī Bhāṣyam, organized teaching lineages, appointed seventy-four siṃhāsanādhipatis, and sent disciples to propagate the sampradāya.

The number seventy-four refers to those teaching-successors, not to 'seventy-four other Divya Desams.' The celebrated public disclosure of the sacred mantra belongs to the Tirukkōṣṭiyūr hagiographic narrative; it is not an initiation of 18,000 people from a Śrīraṅgam tower. The later Vaḍakalai and Teṉkalai streams developed after Rāmānuja's lifetime rather than being divisions established by him.

In short, Rāmānuja brought together what Nāthamuni had recovered, Āḷavandhār had systematized, and the earlier Āchāryas had transmitted, and gave it enduring institutional and philosophical form.

Usage

'Udayavar anugraham' (Udayavar's grace/blessing) is frequently invoked in Śrī Vaiṣṇava discourse — as Rāmānuja is considered to be present and active in the sampradāya even today, blessing all who seek his grace.
