Burning urgency — the intense inner eagerness and impatient longing of the advanced devotee to attain Bhagavān without any delay; a characteristic of the ārta-prapanna (one who surrenders from unbearable longing).

Detailed Explanation

Tvarā — The Burning Urgency for Bhagavān

Tvarā (Sanskrit: tvar = to hurry/be quick; 'urgency', 'haste', 'burning eagerness') is the quality of intense, impatient urgency that characterises an advanced devotee's longing for Bhagavān — the inability to wait any longer, the sense that one more moment of separation is unbearable.

Tvarā and the Āzhvārs: The Āzhvārs — especially Nammāzhvār in the later decads of the Tiruvāimozhi — demonstrate tvarā in its fullest expression. The soul cries out: 'When, O Lord, when will You come? I cannot bear this separation one more moment.' This burning urgency itself becomes an act of bhakti.

Two Types of Prapanna and Tvarā:

  1. Ārtha prapanna (one who surrenders from unbearable urgency) — tvarā is the hallmark; this soul cannot bear to remain in saṃsāra and demands immediate liberation
  2. Dhrta prapanna (one who surrenders while remaining at peace) — this soul trusts Bhagavān's timing and does not experience the same burning urgency

Tvarā as Spiritual Maturity: While tvarā may appear as impatience, the Āchāryas teach it is actually a sign of spiritual maturity — the soul has grown so attached to Bhagavān and so detached from the world that separation is genuinely unbearable. 'The soul that burns with tvarā has already tasted enough of Bhagavān's beauty to know that nothing else will satisfy.'

The Risk of Misunderstanding: Tvarā is not spiritual impatience with one's practice — it is the soul's longing for its rightful home. 'One who burns with tvarā is not dissatisfied with the path; they are dissatisfied with being away from the destination.'
