Tiruvikrama

திருவிக்கிரமன்

Also known as: Trivikrama, Vāmana, Urukrama

Meaning

The avatāra of Bhagavān in which He appeared as the dwarf Vāmana and, granted three steps of land by King Bali, expanded to measure all three worlds in three cosmic strides. In Śrī Vaiṣṇava theology, this act declares Bhagavān's absolute sovereignty over all realms and His claim over every jīva.

Detailed Explanation

Tiruvikrama is the Śrī Vaiṣṇava name for Bhagavān in His Vāmana-Trivikrama avatāra, celebrated in the Divya Prabandham and extolled by Āzhvārs as a supreme manifestation of His playful sovereignty (saulabhya) combined with supreme lordship (paramaiśvarya). The name 'Tiruvikrama' — meaning 'the sacred strider' — captures the moment of cosmic expansion when Vāmana measured earth with one step, the heavens with another, and placed His third foot upon the head of King Bali, reclaiming all the three worlds.

In Viśiṣṭādvaita Vedānta, the Trivikrama episode is read as Bhagavān's sovereign declaration that every realm — from the highest heaven to the netherworld — is His body (śarīra) and that every sentient being within those realms is His śeṣa (remainder/dependent). Rāmānuja and subsequent Āchāryas interpret the three strides as signifying Bhagavān's pervasion of all three states of consciousness and all three planes of existence, leaving no corner of reality outside His care and ownership.

The Āzhvārs meditate on Tiruvikrama with wonder and love. Nammāzhvār in the Tiruvāymoḷi exults that Bhagavān who measured the worlds is the same intimate Lord who dwells in Tirukkuṭantai and other divya-deśas, illustrating the Śrī Vaiṣṇava conviction that Bhagavān's incomprehensible cosmic power and His tender accessibility are non-contradictory facets of one and the same reality.
