Tiruvāsiryam

திருவாசிரியம்

Also known as: திருவாசிரியம்

Meaning

One of Nammāzhvār's four prabandhams, consisting of seven pāsurams in the classical Tamil āsiriyappā metre; in the traditional four-Veda correspondence it is associated with the Yajur Veda and celebrates Bhagavān's cosmic sovereignty and the soul's exclusive service to Him.

Detailed Explanation

The Tiruvāsiriyam is the second of Nammāzhvār's four prabandhams in the received order and the shortest by pāsuram count, comprising seven pāsurams. It is composed in the āsiriyappā metre, from which the work takes its name.

Within the traditional correspondence of Nammāzhvār's four works with the four Vedas, Tiruviruttam is associated with the Ṛg Veda, Tiruvāsiriyam with the Yajur Veda, Periya Tiruvantādi with the Atharva Veda, and Tiruvāimoḻi with the Sāma Veda.

The seven pāsurams contemplate Bhagavān's divine form, cosmic lordship, acts such as measuring the worlds and churning the ocean, and the proper orientation of the soul as His servant. It should not be reduced to a fixed nāyikā-bhāva or gopikā narrative, which is not the defining structure of this prabandham.
