The Philosophical Āzhvār's Main Work
Tirucanda Viruttam ('Sacred Stanzaic Poem') is the principal Divya Prabandham work of Tirumalisai Āzhvār — the Āzhvār most associated with philosophical investigation and comparison of different spiritual paths. Its 120 verses are packed with theological argument, direct address to the Lord, and intense personal devotion.
Background of Tirumalisai Āzhvār
Tirumalisai Āzhvār, by tradition, experimented with multiple paths (Saiva, Sākta, Buddhist, Jaina) before concluding that only Viṣṇu, the supreme Brahman, is the true object of devotion and the genuine path to liberation. This comparative journey gives his compositions a distinctive quality: he has 'been there' and found only Viṣṇu to be genuine. This makes Tirucanda Viruttam particularly convincing as an affirmation of Viṣṇu's supremacy.
Content
Tirucanda Viruttam covers: refutations of rival philosophical positions; celebration of Viṣṇu's paratvam (supremacy) and saulabhya (accessibility); meditations on specific divine avatāras and their significance; descriptions of the Lord's qualities; and personal expressions of devotion and surrender. The viruttam meter gives it a compressed, energetic quality.
Commentary Tradition
Tirucanda Viruttam has received several important commentaries within the Sri Vaishnava tradition. Its philosophical density makes it a favorite for kalakṣepam — extended expository sessions where the meaning is unpacked verse by verse over many days.
