Paribhāṣā

Titikṣā

திதிக்ஷை

Also known as: titikṣā, titiksha, forbearance, patience, endurance, tiksa

Meaning

Forbearance — the fourth of the six inner qualities (ṣaṭ-sampat); the capacity to endure suffering, difficulty, and hardship without being destabilized, retaliated against, or diverted from the spiritual path.

Detailed Explanation

Patient Endurance

Titikṣā ('forbearance,' 'patient endurance,' 'tolerance') is the fourth of the ṣaṭ-sampat. It refers to the capacity to endure suffering — physical pain, emotional wounds, social difficulty, hardship — without retaliating, complaining excessively, or losing inner equilibrium. The person of titikṣā is not insensitive to suffering but is not destroyed by it.

Titikṣā in the Bhagavad Gītā

The Bhagavad Gītā (2.14) teaches: mātrā-sparśās tu kaunteya śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ... — 'Contacts with sense objects give rise to cold and heat, pleasure and pain — they come and go, being impermanent. Learn to endure them.' This is the Gītā's teaching of titikṣā. Kṛṣṇa teaches Arjuna not to be overwhelmed by the inevitable alternation of pleasure and pain.

Models of Titikṣā

Prahlāda is the supreme model: despite his father's relentless persecution — multiple attempts to kill him by fire, water, poison, being trampled by elephants — Prahlāda remained calm, compassionate, and focused on the Lord. His titikṣā was not indifference but active equanimity grounded in his unwavering conviction about the Lord's protection.

Titikṣā and Śaraṇāgati

For the prapanna, titikṣā has a specific character: it is grounded in the confidence that the Lord protects. The prapanna can endure hardship not through sheer willpower but through the conviction that 'even this is the Lord's arrangement, and His arrangement is ultimately for my good.' This makes the prapanna's forbearance different from mere stoicism — it is rooted in trust.
