The Lord's Inner Will
Thiruvuḷḷam (Tamil: tiru = sacred + uḷḷam = inner mind/heart; 'the sacred heart/intent') refers to the divine mind, intention, or will of Bhagavān or an Ācārya. The phrase 'Ācāryar thiruvuḷḷamāyirukkiṟadu' ('if such is the Ācārya's thiruvuḷḷam') expresses that the Ācārya's wish is treated as divinely authoritative — equivalent to Bhagavān's own will.
Thiruvuḷḷam in the Tradition
The concept encodes the tradition's understanding of Bhagavān as Niyantā (the inner regulator of all minds). Bhagavān's thiruvuḷḷam is not an external decree but the innermost intention that pervades all creation. The Āzhvārs and Ācāryas sought to align their own uḷḷam (mind) with the Lord's thiruvuḷḷam — the deepest aspiration of bhakti is to think what the Lord thinks, to will what He wills.
Usage in Community
In Śrī Vaiṣṇava discourse, this phrase appears constantly: 'Let it be according to Bhagavān's thiruvuḷḷam' — an expression of complete submission to divine will rather than personal preference. This is not fatalistic resignation but an active, faithful orienting of the self toward the Lord's loving purpose. The Ācārya's thiruvuḷḷam is treated with the same reverence, since the Ācārya embodies and transmits the Lord's intent.
