The Noble Prince
Thirukumāran (Tamil: tiru = sacred/noble + kumāran = prince/young man; 'the sacred prince' / 'the noble son') is the honorific used within the Śrī Vaiṣṇava community for a son or young male devotee. Rather than the ordinary Tamil makaṉ (son) or payyan (boy), the tradition uses thirukumāran — elevating the child's identity to that of a noble prince of the sampradāya.
Identity Transformation Through Language
Like all Śrī Vaiṣṇava paribhāṣai, this naming practice is not mere courtesy — it is a declaration of theological identity. The child born into the sampradāya is not merely someone's offspring; they are a thirukumāran — a 'prince' in the sense of being a soul with divine dignity and sacred potential.
Related to Thirukumāri
Thirukumāri is the feminine equivalent — the honorific for a girl or young woman. Together, thirukumāran/thirukumāri express that all children in the sampradāya are sacred princes and princesses of the Lord's own family (parivāra).
