Thirukkaṇṇamuthu — Pāyasam as Sacred Food
Thirukkaṇṇamuthu — also encountered in paribhāṣai forms such as thirukkaṇṇal amuthu or thirukkaṇṇāmudhu — denotes pāyasam, a sweet milk preparation offered to Bhagavān. It may be prepared with rice or another grain, milk, sugar or jaggery, ghee and permitted flavourings according to the inherited recipe. The term is a respectful temple and household expression for the sacred food; an etymology from Kaṇṇan or from 'food pleasing to the eyes' is not required for its meaning.
Offering and Occasion
Thirukkaṇṇamuthu may be prepared for tirunakṣatram days, festivals, household tiruvārādhanam and other occasions according to temple or family custom. It is not an invariably required preparation on every festival, and its ingredients and consistency can differ by tradition.
From Naivedya to Prasāda
Before offering, the preparation is naivedya intended for Bhagavān's pleasure. After it has been offered according to the proper procedure, it is received as prasāda. Its sweetness is therefore experienced not merely as culinary richness but as the grace of the Divya Dampati shared with devotees.
