Sudarśana

சுதர்சனன்

Also known as: sudarśana, sudarshana, சுதர்ஶன, Sudarsana chakra, divine discus deity, சுதர்சனன்

Meaning

Bhagavān's divine discus — a divine being of immense power who destroys obstacles, worshipped independently as a protector in Sri Vaishnava temples.

Detailed Explanation

The Divine Weapon-Being

Sudarśana (Sanskrit: su = good/beautiful + darśana = vision; 'of beautiful vision' or 'he who grants auspicious sight') is the divine discus (cakra) of Bhagavān Viṣṇu — not merely a weapon but a divine being in his own right, with his own form, mantra, and worship. In the Pañcarātra tradition, Sudarśana is worshipped as a deity with a humanoid form: a blazing being with eight or sixteen arms, radiating like the sun.

Sudarśana Hōmam

The Sudarśana Hōmam (fire ritual to Sudarśana) is performed at major Śrī Vaiṣṇava temples for protection, removal of obstacles, and victory over evil forces. When a temple is under threat, when a community faces calamity, or when a major new undertaking begins, the Sudarśana Hōmam is among the primary ritual responses.

The Pañcarātra Connection

In the Pañcarātra Vyūha system, Sudarśana is one of the ayudhapuruṣas (weapon-personifications) closely associated with the Lord's protection of His devotees. His blazing speed and precision represent the Lord's śakti (power) and vīrya (valor) in action — the swift, unerring grace that protects surrendered souls.
