Rāmānuja's Birthplace
Śrīperambadūr (Sanskrit: Bhūtapurī) is a town near Chennai in Tamil Nadu, revered as the birthplace of Rāmānuja in 1017 CE. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams praised in the Divya Prabandham, with the presiding deity Ādikeśava Perumāḷ enshrined in the ancient temple.
The Deity and Temple
The presiding deity is Ādikeśava Perumāḷ. Alongside the ancient Divya Desam temple, a grand maṭham complex commemorates Rāmānuja's birth. A towering golden statue of Rāmānuja — among the tallest statues in the world — was consecrated here in 2022, drawing hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.
Pilgrimage Significance
For Sri Vaishnavas, visiting Śrīperambadūr is deeply significant — both to the Divya Desam and to honor the memory of Rāmānuja. The site connects the ancient Āzhvār tradition (through the Divya Prabandham) with the medieval Vishishtadvaita flowering through Rāmānuja's life.
Rāmānuja's Birth as Divine Grace
The tradition understands Rāmānuja's birth not as an ordinary event but as divine anugraham — a great ācārya taking birth to revive the sampradāya and make prapatti accessible to all. His birthplace is thus a tirtha of the guru-paraṃparā itself.
