Also known as: śrī vaikuṇṭha gadyam, Sri Vaikuntha Gadyam, Vaikuntha prose hymn, Ramanuja Vaikuntha gadya

Meaning

The Sacred Prose of Vaikuṇṭha — Rāmānuja's devotional prose vision of the eternal realm of Vaikuṇṭha, describing the Lord's presence, the nitya-sūrīs, and the liberated souls in their eternal service.

Detailed Explanation

Vision of the Eternal Realm

Śrī Vaikuṇṭha Gadyam is the third of Rāmānuja's three gadyas — a devotional prose description of Vaikuṇṭha (paramapada), the Lord's eternal abode. Where the Śaraṇāgati Gadyam is the prayer of surrender and the Śrī Raṅga Gadyam addresses the Lord at Śrīraṅgam, the Vaikuṇṭha Gadyam is a description of the destination — the liberated state.

Description of Vaikuṇṭha

The Vaikuṇṭha Gadyam describes: the infinite, self-luminous realm of pure śuddhasattva; the Lord (Śrīman Nārāyaṇa) seated on Ādiśeṣa, resplendent with all His divine qualities; Lakṣmī (Periya Pirātti) by His side; the nitya-sūrīs (eternally free beings) and mukta-jīvas (liberated souls) engaged in ceaseless, joyful kaiṅkarya (service); and the soul's own arrival at this realm after liberation.

The Goal Made Vivid

The theological importance of the Vaikuṇṭha Gadyam is that it makes the goal of liberation concrete and lovingly desirable. Liberation in Sri Vaishnava thought is not dissolution or blankness but arrival in this radiant, loving, eternally active realm. Reading the Vaikuṇṭha Gadyam kindles mumukṣutva (desire for liberation) precisely because the destination is described as so beautiful.

Reading at the Time of Dehavasāna

The tradition encourages reciting or hearing the Vaikuṇṭha Gadyam at the time of dehavasāna (departure of the body) — so that the prapanna's last conscious experience is the vision of the realm toward which they are journeying. This practice expresses the Sri Vaishnava conviction that consciousness at the moment of death shapes the experience of transition.
