An Ancient Name
Sātvata is one of the oldest designations for the devotees of Vāsudeva/Nārāyaṇa, appearing in the Mahābhārata's Śānti Parva and the Bhāgavata Purāṇam. The term is associated with the Sātvata Saṃhitā (one of the principal Pañcarātra Āgamas) and with the ancient Sātvata clan from which Kṛṣṇa descended.
Relation to Pañcarātra
The Sātvata tradition is closely identified with the Pañcarātra Āgama system — the theological and ritual framework governing Vaiṣṇava temple worship, initiation, and the Vyūha doctrine. The Sātvata Saṃhitā is among the most authoritative Pañcarātra texts and is frequently cited in the tradition's philosophical discussions.
Use in Sri Vaishnava Literature
In Śrī Vaiṣṇava texts, sātvata appears as a near-synonym for Vaiṣṇava or Pāñcarātrika — a practitioner of the Nārāyaṇa-worship tradition within the Pañcarātra framework. Commentators use it when citing the ancient authority of the tradition's roots prior to the formalization of the name 'Śrī Vaiṣṇava.'
