Detailed Explanation

Sarva-svātantra — Bhagavān's Complete Independence

Sarva-svātantra ('completely self-determining') is among the most important attributes of Bhagavān in Viśiṣṭādvaita theology. It designates His absolute freedom from any external constraint, necessity, or obligation — He acts from His own will (svecchā) alone, unconditioned by anything outside Himself.

This quality is the theological counterpart and contrast to the jīva's essential paratantra (dependence). Every jīva — whether in saṃsāra or even in liberation — is paratantra: dependent on Bhagavān for its existence, qualities, activity, and liberation. Bhagavān alone is svatantra: He needs nothing from anyone, is not bound by any external dharma, karma, or metaphysical principle.

Importantly, sarva-svātantratva does not mean arbitrariness or capriciousness. Bhagavān's freedom includes the freedom to commit to His own nature — and His nature is kalyāṇa-guṇapūrṇam (filled with auspicious qualities including perfect truth, compassion, and grace). His commitment to liberating surrendered souls is an expression of His sarva-svātantratva, not a limitation on it. He chooses freely to be the refuge of prapannas.

The Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad's formulation captures this: 'He who, dwelling in all beings, ruling all beings from within, is the ātmā of all beings, whom all beings do not know, whose body all beings are, who rules all beings from within — He is the immortal antaryāmi.' This ruling-from-within is sarva-svātantratva in action.

For the prapanna, understanding Bhagavān's sarva-svātantratva brings both comfort and clarity. Comfort: a truly free Bhagavān can choose to save — no cosmic law prevents Him from accepting the surrender of even the most unqualified soul. Clarity: surrendering to a sarva-svātantra Bhagavān is qualitatively different from relying on an impersonal cosmic mechanism — it is a relationship with a Person who freely chooses to love and protect.
