Sambandhajñāna

ஸம்பந்த ஞானம்

Also known as: sambandhajñāna, sambandha-jnana, knowledge of relationship, relational knowledge

Meaning

Knowledge of one's relationship — the understanding of the specific relationship between the jīva and the Lord (owner-owned, master-servant, soul-body), which is the prerequisite for meaningful prapatti.

Detailed Explanation

Knowledge of the Relationship

Sambandhajñāna ('knowledge of the relationship,' from sambandha = connection/relation + jñāna = knowledge) is the understanding of the ontological relationship between the jīva and Brahman. In Sri Vaishnava theology, this means knowing specifically: (1) the Lord is the owner (svāmī), the jīva is owned; (2) the Lord is the śeṣī (master), the jīva is śeṣa (servant); (3) the Lord is the inner self (sarīrī), the jīva is His body (sarīra). This specific knowledge of relationship is called sambandhajñāna.

Why It Matters for Prapatti

Maṇavāḷa Māmunigal and Piḷḷai Lokācārya emphasize that prapatti, to be meaningful, requires sambandhajñāna: the person surrendering must know to whom they are surrendering and what their relationship to that person is. Surrender without this knowledge is empty — it is either blind faith or social convention, not genuine śaraṇāgati.

The Three-Part Knowledge

Sambandhajñāna is part of the tattva-hita-puruṣārtha triad that the ācārya transmits: the disciple must know (1) tattva (what is real — chit, achit, Brahman and their relationships); (2) hita (what is beneficial — prapatti); (3) puruṣārtha (the goal — Vaikuṇṭha kaiṅkarya). Sambandhajñāna is primarily within the tattva dimension — knowing the relationship that makes prapatti meaningful.

Sambandhajñāna Before the Rahasyas

In the pañca-saṃskāra sequence, the ācārya transmits sambandhajñāna before transmitting the three rahasyas (Tirumantram, Dvayam, Charama Śloka). The rahasyas make sense — and work — only once the recipient knows the relationship in which they stand.
