Sambandha — The Foundational Relationship
Sambandha (Sanskrit: sam = completely + bandha = binding/connection; 'complete connection' or 'relationship') is the first of the three essential categories in the classic Śrī Vaiṣṇava doctrinal framework:
- Sambandha — 'what is the relationship?' (jīvātmā and Bhagavān)
- Upāya — 'what is the means?' (prapatti / bhakti)
- Prāpya — 'what is the goal?' (liberation and eternal kaiṅkaryam)
The Sambandha Revealed: The sambandha between Bhagavān and the jīvātmā is:
- Śeṣī-śeṣa — Bhagavān is the śeṣī (one served), jīvātmā is the śeṣa (servant)
- Rakṣaka-rakṣya — Bhagavān is the protector, jīvātmā the protected
- Niyantṛ-niyamya — Bhagavān is the controller, jīvātmā is controlled
- Śarīra-śarīrī — Bhagavān is the soul (antarātman), jīvātmā is the body
Why Sambandha Knowledge Is First: Without knowing the relationship, one cannot know what means to use (upāya) or what goal to seek (prāpya). 'A person lost in a foreign country who does not know who they are or who their family is cannot find their way home. Sambandha jñāna is knowing: I am Bhagavān's, and Bhagavān is mine.'
The Āchārya and Sambandha: One of the Āchārya's primary roles is to teach the disciple their true sambandha — 'You are Bhagavān's servant. Bhagavān is your master. This has always been true; act accordingly.'
