Sakhya

ஸக்யம்

Also known as: sakhya, friendship devotion, sakhya-bhava

Meaning

Friendship with the Lord — one of the nine forms of devotion (navadhā-bhakti) and one of the five classical devotional stances (pañca-bhāvas), in which the soul relates to the Lord as an intimate friend, expressing itself with love and familiarity.

Detailed Explanation

Friendship as Devotion

Sakhya ('friendship,' from sakhā = friend) is the mode of devotion in which the devotee relates to the Lord not with awe and distance but with intimate, loving familiarity — as the Gopas (cowherd boys) related to Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana. This relationship includes playing together, speaking freely, occasionally even teasing — the hallmarks of genuine friendship.

Arjuna as Model of Sakhya

Arjuna is the supreme model of sakhya in Sri Vaishnava understanding: Kṛṣṇa was his charioteer, his friend, his counselor. Arjuna could argue with Kṛṣṇa, question Him, even despair before Him — the friendship was genuine and allowed for complete honesty. The Bhagavad Gītā, which is Kṛṣṇa teaching Arjuna, arises directly from this sakhya relationship.

The Gopas' Sakhya

In the Vṛndāvana pastimes, the cowherd boys wrestle with Kṛṣṇa, eat from the same leaf, sleep under the same tree — their love is so natural and trusting that they never feel overwhelmed by the Lord's greatness. This ease is the fruit of the deepest sakhya-bhāva, where love has dissolved the distance that awe creates.

Sri Vaishnava Nuance

While sakhya is celebrated, the Sri Vaishnava tradition emphasizes that all five bhāvas (śānta, dāsya, sakhya, vātsalya, mādhurya) are valid, and that for most practitioners, the dāsya (servanthood) and śaraṇāgata-bhāva (surrender) are the most appropriate entry points. Sakhya, when authentic, implies a pre-existing intimacy that has developed through many births of devotion.
