Detailed Explanation

Sakhya Sambandha — The Devotional Friendship With Bhagavān

Sakhya sambandha (Sanskrit: sakhya = friendship + sambandha = relationship; 'the relationship of friendship') is one of the five devotional stances (pañca bhāvas) through which a devotee can relate to Bhagavān:

  1. Śānta bhāva — calm, peaceful relationship (awareness of Bhagavān as the divine reality)
  2. Dāsya bhāva — servant-master relationship
  3. Sakhya bhāva — friendship relationship (equal, intimate companionship)
  4. Vātsalya bhāva — parental relationship (devotee as parent, Bhagavān as child)
  5. Mādhurya bhāva — romantic/union relationship (as in the Gopīs' love for Kṛṣṇa)

The Nature of Sakhya: In sakhya bhāva, the devotee treats Bhagavān as a dear, trusted friend — with the ease, familiarity, and warmth of a true friendship. The formality of master-servant is replaced by the intimacy of companionship. 'The sakhya devotee speaks to Bhagavān not as a suppliant before a king, but as a friend who shares joys and sorrows, who plays alongside Him, who feels comfortable enough to even disagree.'

Classic Example: The relationship between Arjuna and Kṛṣṇa in the Mahābhārata and Bhagavad Gītā is the supreme example of sakhya sambandha — Arjuna calls Kṛṣṇa 'sakhā' (friend), confides his fears and doubts, and receives instruction as from a friend rather than as a formal disciple from a master.

In the Śrī Vaiṣṇava Context: While all five bhāvas are recognised, Śrī Vaiṣṇava theology primarily centres on the dāsya bhāva (service relationship) for the prapanna — understanding the soul as śeṣa (servant) of Bhagavān. The sakhya bhāva is honoured in describing Kṛṣṇa's relationship with the Pāṇḍavas.
