Purāṇa

புராணம்

Also known as: purana, mahapurana, ancient narratives

Meaning

Ancient sacred narrative literature — the eighteen Mahāpurāṇas and related works transmit Vedic teaching through cosmology, genealogy, avatāra and devotee narratives. Śrī Vaiṣṇavas revere the Bhāgavata, while the Viṣṇu Purāṇa has a uniquely foundational status as *Purāṇa-ratna* in the sampradāya.

Detailed Explanation

Purāṇa — Ancient Story as Sacred Instruction

Purāṇa (Sanskrit: purā = formerly/ancient + na = narrative; 'stories of ancient times') refers to the body of eighteen mahāpurāṇas and eighteen upapurāṇas (minor purāṇas) that transmit Vedic teaching, cosmology, theological instruction, and devotional practice through engaging narrative.

The Five Hallmarks (Pañca-lakṣaṇa) of a Purāṇa:

  1. Sarga — primary creation of the universe
  2. Pratisarga — secondary creation after dissolution
  3. Vaṃśa — genealogy of sages and kings
  4. Manvantara — ages of the Manus (world periods)
  5. Vaṃśānucarita — deeds of the solar and lunar dynasties

Vaiṣṇava Purāṇas in Śrī Vaiṣṇava Tradition: The Śrīmad Bhāgavata is deeply revered and contains twelve skandhas, including extensive accounts of devotees and Kṛṣṇa's līlās. Yet Śrī Vaiṣṇava Āchāryas give a uniquely foundational place to the Viṣṇu Purāṇa, traditionally praised as Purāṇa-ratna and extensively used by Rāmānuja and later Āchāryas for tattva, creation, the nature of Bhagavān, and the cit-acit-Īśvara relationship. The Bhāgavata should therefore not be declared the single supreme Purāṇa of the sampradāya at the expense of the Viṣṇu Purāṇa.

Purāṇas in Practice: Purāṇic passages are heard in discourse, cited in kālakṣepam, and used to illuminate the lives of Bhagavān and His devotees. A seven-day Bhāgavata-saptāha is prominent in several wider Vaiṣṇava and devotional communities, but it should not be presented as a defining or universally central Śrī Vaiṣṇava observance.
