phalam

பலம்

Also known as: phalam, phala, falam, result, fruit

Meaning

Fruit, result, or reward — the spiritual or material outcome of an action, worship, or practice. In Sri Vaishnavism, the highest phalam is moksha (liberation) or nityakainkarya in Vaikuṇṭham.

Detailed Explanation

Karma and Phalam

Every action (karma) produces a result (phalam) — this is the foundational principle of Indian thought. The Mīmāṃsā school organizes all Vedic injunctions around the karma-phala relationship. The Bhagavad Gītā's famous advice to act without attachment to phala (mā phaleṣu kadācana) does not deny that karma produces phala, but counsels against acting for the phala.

Categories of Phala

  1. Iha-phala — worldly results (health, wealth, children, success)
  2. Para-phala — results in the afterlife or higher realms (Svarga, etc.)
  3. Mukti-phala — liberation itself as the fruit of sustained upāya
  4. Anubhava-phala — the unending experience of kainkarya in Vaikuṇṭham — the highest phalam in Sri Vaishnavism

Phalam in Prapatti

In prapatti, the devotee is instructed not to ask for any specific phala beyond the Lord's own pleasure and the granting of liberation. The Prapanna is taught to relinquish even the desire for phala — making the surrender truly unconditional. The Dvaya mantra's second clause (śrīmate nārāyaṇāya namaḥ) expresses this: "namaḥ" = "not mine" = I renounce all claim to phala for myself; everything is offered to him.

Phala-Kīrtana

Many Sanskrit texts conclude with a phala-śruti — a declaration of the fruits of reciting or studying the text. The Viṣṇu Sahasranāma ends with: whoever recites these thousand names will obtain courage, intelligence, and ultimately liberation. Sri Vaishnavism accepts these declarations as genuine, while also clarifying that the Lord himself is the ultimate phalam — not a reward separate from him.
