Parāśara

பராசரர்

Also known as: Parashara, Paraasara, Parasara Bhattar, Parasara Bhatta

Meaning

Parāśara refers principally to the ancient sage Parāśara, father of Veda Vyāsa and author of the Viṣṇu Purāṇam, whose teachings are foundational to Vaiṣṇava theology; the name also evokes Parāśara Bhaṭṭar, the son of Kūrattāzhvān and a foremost disciple of Rāmānuja.

Detailed Explanation

Parāśara — The Sage and His Illustrious Namesake

Parāśara is venerated in two primary senses within Śrī Vaiṣṇava tradition: as the ancient sage Maharṣi Parāśara, and as Parāśara Bhaṭṭar, the great 12th-century Āchārya.

Maharṣi Parāśara — Father of Vyāsa: The sage Parāśara, son of Śakti and grandson of Vasiṣṭha, is one of the most celebrated Vedic seers. He is the author of the Viṣṇu Purāṇam — the foundational Purāṇa for Vaiṣṇava theology, which Rāmānuja and his successors cite constantly as authoritative. The Viṣṇu Purāṇam systematically expounds the nature of Brahman as Viṣṇu, the five-fold knowledge (pañca-jñāna), and the path of Bhagavad-bhakti. Parāśara's teaching to Maitreyar on the nature of Brahman, jagat, and jīva constitutes one of the clearest pre-Rāmānuja formulations of what becomes Viśiṣṭādvaita. He is also the father of Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana — Veda Vyāsa — the compiler of the Vedas and author of the Mahābhārata.

Parāśara Bhaṭṭar — Son of Kūrattāzhvān: In Śrī Vaiṣṇava history, the name Parāśara is most immediately associated with Parāśara Bhaṭṭar (c. 1122–1200 CE), one of the most brilliant theological intellects produced by the tradition. The son of Śrī Kūrattāzhvān (Rāmānuja's most intimate disciple) and Āṇḍāḷ Ammāḷ, Bhaṭṭar was named by Rāmānuja himself after the ancient sage. His major works include Bhagavad-guṇa-darpaṇam (a luminous commentary on the Viṣṇu Sahasranāmam) and Śrī Guṇa Ratnakōśam (a hymn on Śrī Raṅganātha). Bhaṭṭar was renowned for his ability to defeat Śaiva debaters and for his unsurpassed exposition of Bhagavān's kalyāṇa-guṇas.

The Pārāśarya Smṛti: Rāmānuja's successors frequently cite the Pārāśarya Smṛti — texts attributed to the Parāśara tradition — in establishing Śrī Vaiṣṇava doctrine. This cross-reference of sage and śiṣya reflects the tradition's continuous, living textual conversation across centuries.
