The Discipline of Proper Conduct
Oḍukkam (Tamil: restraint, disciplined behavior, knowing one's proper station) refers to the behavioral quality of maintaining decorum, appropriate restraint, and awareness of one's position in relation to the Lord, the Ācārya, and the community. It is distinct from mere politeness — it is an inner orientation of humility and appropriate self-placement.
In Relation to Bhagavān
Oḍukkam before the Lord means: not claiming more intimacy than one has earned, not presuming on Bhagavān's grace, not performing worship carelessly or with a distracted mind. It is the quality of a servant who knows his place — not paralyzed by distance, but not overstepping into familiarity either.
In Community
Within the Śrī Vaiṣṇava community, oḍukkam manifests as: using appropriate honorifics, not interrupting Ācāryas, maintaining proper dress and conduct in sacred spaces, and not making ostentatious display of one's devotion or learning. The Ācāryas repeatedly emphasized that true devotion is expressed through oḍukkam rather than spectacular religious performance.
