Illness in Devotional Language
Novu sāttrikoḷḷudhal (Tamil: novu = pain/illness + sāttrikoḷḷudhal = to report/acknowledge; 'acknowledging the suffering') is the devotional expression used within the Śrī Vaiṣṇava community when referring to a devotee's illness or physical distress. The phrasing itself is significant: one 'reports' (sāttrikoḷḷudhal) the illness as if registering it with the Lord — acknowledging that even this suffering is within His sovereign dispensation.
Theological Perspective on Illness
For a prapanna, illness is understood within the framework of prārabdha-karma — the portion of karma that has begun to bear fruit in the current life and must be lived through. The tradition does not encourage stoic suppression but rather acceptance combined with continued devotion: even while ill, one recites the Divya Prabandham, maintains as much of the nityānuṣṭhānam as possible, and trusts in Bhagavān's grace.
Community Vocabulary
Within the Śrī Vaiṣṇava community, when someone is ill, one says 'novu sāttrikoḷḷukiṟār' — they are 'acknowledging their pain/illness.' This framing reminds both the person and the community that physical suffering is a temporary aspect of the prārabdha journey, not the ultimate reality.
