Detailed Explanation

Nañjīyar — The Convert Āchārya Who Crowned Tiruvāymozhi Commentary

Nañjīyar (literally 'Our Jīyar / Ascetic', an honorific given by Parāśara Bhaṭṭar; originally named Mādhavāchārya) is a pivotal figure in the Śrī Vaiṣṇava Āchārya paramparā following Parāśara Bhaṭṭar. Originally an immensely wealthy and accomplished scholar residing near Melkote (Mēlnaāḍu), he was engaged in debate by Parāśara Bhaṭṭar, who traveled north specifically to win him over to Viśiṣṭādvaita. Overwhelmed by Bhaṭṭar's profound scholarship and exposition—particularly drawing from his Viṣṇu Sahasranāma commentary (Bhagavad Guṇa Darpaṇa)—Mādhavāchārya surrendered at Bhaṭṭar's feet, renounced his worldly riches, and took sannyāsa. When he arrived in Śrīraṅgam, Bhaṭṭar embraced him warmly, calling him "Nam Jīyar" ("Our Ascetic"), and initiated him as Vedānti.

Nañjīyar's principal contribution to the Dravida Vedānta commentary tradition is his Oṉpathiṉāyirappaḍi (9,000-paḍi) commentary on Nammāḻvār's Tiruvāymoḻi—the second major commentary on the text, expanding upon Thirukurukai Pirān Piḷḷān's foundational 6,000-paḍi. His prized disciple Nampillai served as the scribe who carefully documented Nañjīyar's expositions.

Nañjīyar served as a vital bridge in the Ubhaya Vedānta synthesis, integrating deep Sanskrit Śāstric scholarship with the emotional and philosophical depths of the Divya Prabandham. His oral traditions and scholastic lineage directly nurtured Nampillai, whose celebrated lectures at Śrīraṅgam were later recorded by Vadakku Thiruvīdhi Piḷḷai to produce the monumental Īḍu 36,000 Paḍi.
