The Great Teacher of Śrīraṅgam
Nampiḷḷai ("our little lord") is one of the most celebrated ācāryas in the post-Rāmānuja tradition. A householder (gṛhastha) scholar based in Śrīraṅgam, he attracted thousands of disciples and his kalakshepam (oral discourses) on the Tiruvāymozhi drew vast audiences.
The 36,000 Paḍi Commentary
The Īḍu commentary on the Tiruvāymozhi — the most comprehensive and revered commentary in the Tenkalai tradition — derives from Nampiḷḷai's oral teaching. The 36,000 Paḍi Īḍu was compiled by Vaṭakkutiruvīdhippiḷḷai (one of Nampiḷḷai's disciples) over many years of listening to Nampiḷḷai's discourses.
The Īḍu is considered the "crown of commentaries" (urai śikhāmaṇi) on the Tiruvāymozhi — it is the text that the Tenkalai ācāryas study most deeply, and its phrases are quoted throughout Tenkalai theological literature.
Teaching Style
Nampiḷḷai was famous for his ability to make the deepest philosophical points through stories and upamānas (analogies). His conversations recorded in the Ēḍu Maṇipravāḷam tradition convey a warmth and accessibility that made the Tiruvāymozhi's wisdom available to all.
His disciple Periyavāccān Piḷḷai wrote commentaries on all 4,000 Divya Prabandha verses — informed by Nampiḷḷai's teaching.
