Detailed Explanation

Nādasvaram — The Auspicious Wind Instrument of Temple Festivals

The nādasvaram is a long South Indian double-reed wind instrument renowned for its powerful, penetrating and auspicious sound. It has an honoured place in many temple festivals, processions, weddings and other maṅgala occasions. In Śrī Vaiṣṇava temples it may announce an utsava procession, accompany important moments of worship, and enrich the public experience of Bhagavān's purappāḍu. Its use is governed by the resources and established custom of each temple; it is not indispensable to every individual service in every temple.

The Temple Ensemble

A nādasvaram is commonly accompanied by the tavil, a barrel-shaped percussion instrument. An ensemble may contain one or more nādasvarams, one or more tavils, tāḷam and, in some traditions, an ottu or another drone support. The number and arrangement vary. A performer is properly called a nādasvara vidvān or nādasvaram artiste. Nāṭṭuvanār is principally a title for the conductor or teacher in a dance tradition, not the standard name for a nādasvaram player; mēḷam can denote the ensemble.

Rāga, Time and Sampradāya

Particular temples and hereditary musical lineages preserve time-sensitive rāgas, compositions and festival repertoires. These living musical traditions are valuable, but they do not form one invariant Āgamic rāga timetable binding every Śrī Vaiṣṇava temple. The instrument's sampradāya significance lies in its maṅgala sound and its service to Bhagavān during the occasions for which the local temple tradition appoints it.
