Mutal Tiruvantādi

முதல் திருவந்தாதி

Also known as: mutal tiruvantādi, Mutal Tiruvantadi, First Antadi, Poygai Āzhvār's work

Meaning

The First Antādi — Poygai Āzhvār's 100-verse Divya Prabandham composition in the antādi style, one of the three earliest Āzhvār works celebrating the Lord as the primordial light that illuminates all existence.

Detailed Explanation

The First of the Three Early Antādis

Mutal Tiruvantādi ('First Antādi') is the 100-verse composition of Poygai Āzhvār — the first of the three early Āzhvārs (Poygai, Bhūtat, Pey). According to tradition, the three early Āzhvārs met in a narrow shelter during a rainy night at Tirukkōvilūr, and their compositions — Mutal, Iraṇṭām, and Mūṉṟām Tiruvantādi — arose in sequence as they composed spontaneously in response to the darkness, the lamp-light, and finally the Lord's appearance.

The Light Metaphor

Poygai Āzhvār opens with the celebrated verse: 'The entire earth is my lamp, the great sea is my oil, the brilliant sun is the light I offer to the Lord.' This grand cosmic offering — transforming the whole universe into a lamp for the Lord — sets the tone: Mutal Tiruvantādi celebrates the Lord as the source of all light and the worthy recipient of the universe's entire gift.

Antādi Structure

Like all antādi compositions, each verse ends with a word or syllable that begins the next verse, creating an unbroken chain of 100 linked verses. This form expresses the continuity and unbroken nature of devotional experience.

Theological Content

Mutal Tiruvantādi establishes fundamental Vishishtadvaita themes: Viṣṇu as the sole supreme; His accessibility to even the simplest devotee; the soul's inherent longing for the Lord; and the power of divine grace to overcome all obstacles. It is read as a foundational statement of the Āzhvār experience.
