Mūṉṟām Tiruvantādi

மூன்றாம் திருவந்தாதி

Also known as: mūṉṟām tiruvantādi, Munram Tiruvantadi, Third Antadi, Peyāzhvār's work

Meaning

The Third Antādi — Peyāzhvār's 100-verse Divya Prabandham composition, the culminating work of the three early Āzhvārs, in which he describes the Lord's divine form appearing in the darkness of the narrow shelter.

Detailed Explanation

The Third and Culminating Antādi

Mūṉṟām Tiruvantādi ('Third Antādi') is Peyāzhvār's 100-verse composition, the third and culminating work of the three early Āzhvārs' sequence. As the two lamps (Poigai's cosmic lamp and Bhūtat's devotion-lamp) illuminated the space, the Lord Himself appeared in the narrow shelter. Peyāzhvār's opening verse begins tirukkaṇḍēn pon mēni kaṇḍēn — 'I beheld Śrī; I beheld the golden divine body' — and goes on to celebrate the sun-like complexion, the discus, and the conch.

The Direct Vision

Mūṉṟām Tiruvantādi is unique in the Āzhvār tradition for its direct, matter-of-fact declaration of divine vision. The opening pāsuram sees Śrī on the Lord's chest and beholds His golden form, radiant complexion, discus, and conch with the simplicity of one reporting actual experience — which, within the tradition, it is.

Theological Content

The 100 verses cover: the Lord's divine form and beauty; His qualities of protection, accessibility, and sovereignty; the liberation available to those who take refuge; and the Āzhvār's own experience of devotion. Peyāzhvār's vision establishes a template for the archa-avatāra experience: the Lord, accompanied by Śrī, is personally present and directly visible.

The Three Antādis as a Unit

The three antādis of the Mudal Āzhvārs are always studied together — they represent the progression from cosmic offering (outer), to devotional offering (inner), to direct divine vision (the fruit). Together they model the complete arc of devotional experience.
