Maṇi

மணி

Also known as: Mani, Maṇi, Divine gem, Ratna, Manipravala-mani

Meaning

The divine gems and jewels that adorn Bhagavān's form — above all the Kaustubha gem on His chest — set also in the Kirīṭa crown, armlets, and other ornaments; the term 'Maṇi' also appears in the compound Maṇipravāḷam, the classical Śrī Vaiṣṇava literary language.

Detailed Explanation

Maṇi — The Divine Gems of Bhagavān

The Maṇi encompasses the category of divine gems and jewels that are woven into, or set upon, the various ornaments adorning Bhagavān's divya-maṅgala-vigraha. The pre-eminent gem is the Kaustubha — the celestial jewel that rests upon Bhagavān's chest, sometimes described as the gem that arose from the churning of the cosmic ocean (kṣīra-sāgara-manthana). The Kaustubha, in Viśiṣṭādvaita interpretation, represents the totality of cit (conscious beings) who rest eternally upon the chest of Bhagavān, held close to His heart.

Beyond the Kaustubha, gems are set throughout Bhagavān's ornaments: in the Kirīṭa crown, precious stones blaze like miniature suns; in the Kaṭaka armlets and Keyūra shoulder-bands, gems catch the light of the sanctum; in the Nūpura anklets, jewels ring each step with their sparkle. This pervading presence of gems throughout the divine form speaks to a theological truth: Bhagavān is niratiśaya-ratnādhipati — the unsurpassed Lord of all gems and wealth, He who is Himself the greatest jewel (para-maṇi) in the universe.

The word Maṇi takes on an additional dimension in the compound Maṇipravāḷam — the classical literary language of the Śrī Vaiṣṇava Sampradāya that elegantly blends Sanskrit (Maṇi, gem) and Tamil (Pravāḷam, coral). Just as gems and coral together produce beauty greater than either alone, Maṇipravāḷam weaves Sanskrit philosophical precision with Tamil devotional warmth to produce the unique literary voice of the Sampradāya. Works of Āchāryas such as Piḷḷai Lokācārya and Azhagiya Maṇavāḷa Māmunigaḷ are composed in this jewel-language, making Maṇi a resonant symbol not only of Bhagavān's adornment but of the Sampradāya's own identity.
