Mānasa Kaiṅkaryam

மானஸ கைங்கர்யம்

Also known as: manasa-kainkaryam, mental service, inner devotion

Meaning

Mental service — service to Bhagavān performed through the mind: meditation on His form and qualities, interior devotion, contemplation of His greatness; the subtlest and most continuous of the three forms of kaiṅkaryam.

Detailed Explanation

Mānasa Kaiṅkaryam — Service Through the Mind

Mānasa kaiṅkaryam (Sanskrit: mānasa = pertaining to the mind + kaiṅkaryam = service; 'service through the mind') is service to Bhagavān performed through the faculty of mind — interior devotion, contemplation of Bhagavān's form and qualities, meditation on His deeds and names, and the sustained interior orientation of one's attention toward Bhagavān.

Examples of Mānasa Kaiṅkaryam:

  • Dhyānam — sustained meditation on Bhagavān's divine form
  • Smaraṇam — continuous interior remembrance of Bhagavān
  • Mentally offering flowers, fragrance, and service to the divine form during meditation
  • Contemplating the Āchārya's teachings and their application
  • Maintaining bhagavad-viṣayam — the mind dwelling in Bhagavān's qualities rather than sense-objects
  • Interior gratitude (kṛtajñatā) for Bhagavān's protection and grace

Why Mānasa Is the Subtlest: Kāyika kaiṅkaryam stops when the body rests and vācika kaiṅkaryam stops when speech ceases, while remembrance can accompany many activities. Continuous Bhagavad-smaraṇa is cherished as kainkaryam. For a valid prapanna, however, attaining Bhagavān does not depend on successfully producing a particular final thought at death; protection rests on Bhagavān's accepted responsibility and promise. Final remembrance is therefore not an additional independent condition imposed on prapatti.

The Āzhvārs' Mānasa Kaiṅkaryam: The extraordinary depth of the Āzhvārs' bhakti arose from ceaseless mānasa kaiṅkaryam. Nammāzhvār's very existence was interior absorption in Bhagavān — the Tiruvāimozhi is mānasa kaiṅkaryam made visible in verse.
