Meaning

The divine earrings worn by Bhagavān — especially the Makara-kuṇḍala (crocodile-form earrings) — celebrated in the pāsurams of Nammāzhvār and Tirumaṅgai Āzhvār as ornaments that frame the resplendent divine countenance at specific Divya Desam temples.

Detailed Explanation

Kuṇḍala — The Divine Earrings of Bhagavān

The Kuṇḍala refers to the sacred earrings that adorn the divine ears of Bhagavān Śrī Vaikuṇṭhanātha. In Viṣṇu iconography and theology, the most celebrated form of this ornament is the Makara-kuṇḍala — the earring fashioned in the form of the makara, the mythical sea-creature that represents the primal depths of cosmic waters. The Makara-kuṇḍala appears prominently in Purāṇic descriptions of Viṣṇu and in the Pañcarātra Āgamas as one of the defining ornaments of the divine form.

In Āzhvār literature, the Kuṇḍala frames the divine countenance (tirumukhāmaradam) that the devotee longs to behold. Nammāzhvār, in the Tiruvāymozhi, describes the divine face of Bhagavān as he beholds Him at specific Divya Desam temples — and the earrings, swaying with Bhagavān's slightest movement, become a focal point of the devotee's loving gaze (maṅgalāśāsanam). Tirumaṅgai Āzhvār, in his Periya Tirumozhi and Tiruneḍundāṇḍakam, similarly celebrates the earringed face of the Lord enshrined at Divya Desams like Śrīraṅgam, Tiruvaraṅgam, and Tirumālirumśōlai.

Theologically, the Kuṇḍala's significance lies in its placement — at the ears that hear the prayers, praises, and cries of all beings. Āchāryas have taught that Bhagavān's ears are always open to the devotee's call, and the adornment of those ears with radiant ornaments reflects the kalyāṇa-guṇa of sarvajñatva (omniscience) — He who hears all, knows all, and responds with perfect grace. The glittering Kuṇḍala around those ears is thus a symbol of divine attentiveness and compassionate listening.
