Kṣīrasāgara

க்ஷீரஸாகரம்

Also known as: kṣīrasāgara, Ksheera Sagara, Milk Ocean, Kshirabdhi, kseera-sagara

Meaning

The cosmic Milk Ocean within Bhagavān's līlā-vibhūti, where He manifests as Kṣīrābdhinātha reclining on Ādiśeṣa and where the devas approach Him for protection. It is not Paramapada or a realm beyond the material universe, and it is not the ordinary dwelling place of all devas.

Detailed Explanation

The Ocean of Milk

Kṣīrasāgara (kṣīra = milk, sāgara = ocean) is the cosmic milk ocean described in the Purāṇas and the Āzhvār literature — a celebrated cosmic ocean within the created, material universe (līlā-vibhūti) where Viṣṇu-Nārāyaṇa resides in the form of Kṣīrābdhi-nātha (Lord of the milk ocean), reclining on Ādiśeṣa as Lakṣmī tends to him.

The Churning of the Ocean

The most famous episode involving the Kṣīrasāgara is the Samudra Manthana (churning of the cosmic ocean) — in which the gods and demons churned the milk ocean using Mandara mountain as the churning rod and Vāsuki as the rope, in order to obtain amṛta (the nectar of immortality). This episode produced:

  • The divine physician Dhanvantari with the pot of amṛta
  • Lakṣmī herself, arising from the ocean
  • The Kaustubha gem (now on Viṣṇu's chest)
  • The divine elephant Airāvata, horse Uccaiḥśravas, and many other treasures
  • The hālāhala poison (swallowed by Śiva)

Relationship to Vaikuṇṭham

Kṣīrasāgara is not Vaikuṇṭha, not part of nitya-vibhūti, and not a spatial anteroom just outside Paramapada. It belongs to the created cosmos and is the locus in which Bhagavān makes the Kṣīrābdhinātha manifestation available where Nārāyaṇa manifests in his para-vyūha form to whom the devas go for refuge and counsel. The Āzhvārs celebrate the Kṣīrābdhi-nātha form — the Lord reclining on the ocean — as a vision of his compassionate accessibility to the divine world.
