க்ருபாமாத்ர ப்ரஸந்நாசார்யர்

Also known as: krpa-matra-prasanna-acharya, acharya moved by compassion alone

Meaning

An Āchārya pleased (*prasanna*) by compassion (*kṛpā*) alone — one who accepts and initiates a disciple purely out of divine compassion, without any action, merit, or approach from the disciple's side.

Detailed Explanation

Kṛpāmātra Prasannāchārya — The Āchārya Moved by Pure Compassion

Kṛpāmātra prasannāchārya ('the Āchārya who is made gracious by compassion alone') is one of the two classical types of Āchārya distinguished by what moves them to accept a disciple, as described in texts like Anthimopāya Niṣṭhā.

Two Types of Āchārya: (1) Kṛpāmātra prasannāchārya — moved solely by compassion, regardless of the disciple's merit or effort; (2) Svānuvṛtti prasannāchāryan — moved by the disciple's sustained effort, service, and approach (svānuvṛtti).

The Rarer and Higher Form: The kṛpāmātra type is considered rarer and in a sense higher — because it requires no qualification on the disciple's part. Such an Āchārya's gaze itself transforms the recipient. The tradition cites Namperumāḷ's direct grace to Nammāzhvār or Maṇavāḷa Māmunigaḷ's compassionate acceptance of earnest souls as examples of this paragata svīkāram in human form.

Practical Meaning: The teaching is not that disciples need not exert themselves — but that the ultimate grace is Bhagavān's and the Āchārya's to give, freely. Even the disciple's effort is itself a gift of grace. This humbles the disciple and deepens ananya-śaraṇatva (having no other refuge).
