Kariamuthu

கரியமுது

Also known as: kariamuthu, கரியமுது, vegetable prasadam, kari amuthu, Kariyamuthu

Meaning

Vegetable side dish — a temple prasādam prepared from cooked vegetables, served alongside the main rice prasādam.

Detailed Explanation

Sacred Vegetable Preparation

Kariamuthu (Tamil: kari = vegetable/curry + amuthu = ambrosia/nectar; 'the nectar of vegetables') is the devotional name for a vegetable side dish prepared as prasādam in the temple kitchen or a Śrī Vaiṣṇava household. The suffix amuthu (ambrosia) transforms an ordinary culinary term into a devotional one — the vegetable dish, once offered to Bhagavān, becomes the Lord's own nectar distributed to devotees.

The Naming Convention

In Śrī Vaiṣṇava devotional vocabulary, many food items receive the suffix amuthu ('nectar') to express that they are prasādam — food blessed by contact with Bhagavān:

  • Sātramuthu — rasam
  • Thayiramuthu — curd rice
  • Thirukaṇṇamuthu — pāyāsam
  • Kariamuthu — vegetable preparation

This language practice transforms the mundane act of eating into a recognition of divine grace.

Temple Context

In major temple kitchens (maḍaippaḷḷi), the kariamuthu is one of the standard items prepared for the deity's daily naivedyam. Different vegetables are used on different days according to temple tradition and seasonal availability.
