Kāraṇa Traya

காரண த்ரயம்

Also known as: karana-traya, karana-trayam, three causes, upadana-nimitta-sahakari

Meaning

The threefold cause — the three types of causal factors (*kāraṇas*) in Vedāntic metaphysics: the material cause (*upādāna kāraṇa*), the efficient cause (*nimitta kāraṇa*), and the instrumental/accessory cause (*sahakāri kāraṇa*); used in Śrī Vaiṣṇava theology to explain how Bhagavān is the cause of creation.

Detailed Explanation

Kāraṇa Traya — The Three Causes in Vedāntic Cosmology

Kāraṇa traya (Sanskrit: kāraṇa = cause + traya = group of three; 'the threefold cause') refers to the three distinct types of causal involvement recognised in Vedāntic metaphysics for any significant creation or transformation:

The Three Kāraṇas:

  1. Upādāna kāraṇa (material cause) — the substance from which something is made. E.g., clay is the upādāna kāraṇa of a pot; gold is the upādāna kāraṇa of a ring.
  2. Nimitta kāraṇa (efficient cause) — the agent who designs, shapes, or initiates the creation. E.g., the potter is the nimitta kāraṇa of the pot.
  3. Sahakāri kāraṇa (accessory/instrumental cause) — the tools, conditions, and assisting factors without which the creation cannot happen. E.g., the potter's wheel and water are sahakāri kāraṇas for the pot.

Why This Matters in Viśiṣṭādvaita: Rāmānujāchārya uses the kāraṇa traya framework to establish Bhagavān's unique position as ALL THREE causes simultaneously:

  • Upādāna: Bhagavān is the material cause — the universe is made OF Bhagavān's śarīra (body), not from something external
  • Nimitta: Bhagavān is the efficient cause — He wills, designs, and initiates creation
  • Sahakāri: Bhagavān also provides the conditions and sustaining framework for creation

The Uniqueness of Brahman as All Three: This triple causality is what distinguishes Brahman from ordinary creators. 'A potter can only be the nimitta kāraṇa — he cannot also be the clay. But Bhagavān is uniquely both the Creator and the stuff of creation — because the universe is His own body (śarīra), not something external to Him.'
