Devotional Vocabulary of Eating
Kaṇḍaruḷap paṇṇudal (Tamil: 'graciously beholding and partaking') is the respectful, devotional expression used when describing the Lord accepting naivedyam. Rather than saying the priest 'offers food,' the tradition says the Lord 'graciously partakes' (kaṇḍaruḷal = graciously looking upon + paṇṇudal = to do).
Honorific Language
In Śrī Vaiṣṇava liturgical and devotional speech, all activities of the deity are expressed in honorific terms. This is not euphemism but theological precision: the Lord's 'eating' is a real act of divine grace — He truly accepts what is offered, transforms it through His attention into prasādam, and 'nourishes' Himself on the devotee's love even more than on the food itself.
Parallel: Kan Vaḷarudal
Similarly, kaṇ vaḷarudal (literally 'eyes resting / growing') is the devotional expression for the Lord's sleep or rest — not mere unconsciousness but a divine, gracious rest. The reclining posture (kidantha tirukkolam) of the Lord at Śrī Raṅgam is described with this language.
