Janmāṣṭamī

ஜன்மாஷ்டமி

Also known as: janmāṣṭamī, Janmashtami, Gokulashtami, Krishna Janmashtami

Meaning

The celebration of Kṛṣṇa's divine birth — observed on the aṣṭamī (eighth day) of the dark fortnight of Śrāvaṇa/Bhādrapada month, one of the most joyful Sri Vaishnava festivals.

Detailed Explanation

The Divine Birth

Janmāṣṭamī ("the eighth of birth") commemorates the miraculous birth of Kṛṣṇa in the prison of Mathurā at midnight — a moment of extraordinary cosmic significance. The Bhāgavata Purāṇam describes the entire atmosphere transformed at the moment of Kṛṣṇa's birth: the stars shone brighter, the rivers flowed with flowers, the devas rejoiced, sacred fragrances filled the air.

The Night Observance

Traditionally, Janmāṣṭamī is observed by:

  • Upavāsa (fasting) throughout the day — complete fast until after midnight
  • Bhajana — devotional singing, especially of Kṛṣṇa's childhood stories
  • Saptaha — week-long recitation of the Bhāgavata Purāṇam leading up to this day
  • Kāḷiya Damanam — symbolic enactment of Kṛṣṇa's subduing of the serpent Kāliya
  • Breaking the fast at midnight — eating the sacred pañcamṛta and naivedyam after offering them to the newborn Kṛṣṇa

In Sri Vaishnava Practice

For Sri Vaishnavas:

  • Tiruvarādhanam for the baby Kṛṣṇa (bāla-kṛṣṇa) in the śayanam (reclining) or bāla (child) pose
  • Recitation of the 10th skandha Bhāgavatam passages about Kṛṣṇa's birth
  • Periyāzhvār's Tirumozhi verses celebrating the baby Kṛṣṇa
  • The Āṇḍāḷ Nācciyār Tirumozhi passages about the dream of Kṛṣṇa

Gōkula Aṣṭamī

The following day (navamī) is celebrated as Gōkula Aṣṭamī — the arrival of Kṛṣṇa in Gokula and Yaśodā's joyful reception of the child.
