Rāmānuja Before Sannyāsa
Iḷaiyāzhwār (Tamil: iḷaiya = young/junior + āzhwār = the deeply immersed sage) was Rāmānuja's name within the tradition during the period before he formally took sannyāsa and became Yatirājar. The title honors his exceptional spiritual gifts even as a householder — his devotion, learning, and grace were so evident that he was recognized as an Āzhwār-equivalent.
The Progression
Rāmānuja's names track his spiritual journey:
- Iḷaiya Āzhwār / Iḷaiyāzhwār — the young devotee, pre-sannyāsa
- EmperumāṆār — the supreme Ācārya-Lord (used throughout his life)
- Yatirājar — the king of sannyāsis (after formal sannyāsa)
- Udayavar — the Lord who is ours
- Rāmānujācarya — his Sanskrit name used in formal contexts
