Gāmbhīrya — Fathomless Depth
Gāmbhīrya (Sanskrit: gambhīra — deep, profound) denotes a quality of unfathomable depth, gravity, and serene profundity. Among the kalyāṇa-guṇas (auspicious qualities) described in the Śrī Vaiṣṇava tradition, gāmbhīrya points to that aspect of Bhagavān or of a mahātma which cannot be fully plumbed by ordinary cognition.
In poetic description, gāmbhīrya is like the ocean — vast, deep, and quietly powerful without being turbulent at the surface. It implies that the one who possesses it cannot be easily read or reduced.
In Yathīndra Pravaṇa Prabhāvam and related āchārya-vaibhava literature, gāmbhīrya is frequently cited when describing Māmunigaḷ — his composure, the inscrutability of his wisdom, and the depth of his devotion to Nammāzhvār and Raṅganātha. Disciples who spent years with him still felt they had touched only the surface of his true nature.
