Dvaya-prakaraṇam — The Section on the Dvaya Mantra
The Dvaya-prakaraṇam is the richly expounded section of Piḷḷai Lokācārya's Mumukṣuppadi dedicated to the second rahasyam, the Dvaya Mantra. Of the three prakaraṇams in the Mumukṣuppadi (Aṣṭākṣara, Dvaya, Carama Śloka), the Dvaya-prakaraṇam is the most extensive and is often considered the heart of the work.
The Dvaya Mantra reads: Śrīman Nārāyaṇa caraṇau śaraṇaṃ prapadye / Śrīmate Nārāyaṇāya namaḥ — its two sentences constituting the 'dvaya' (two). The prakaraṇam unpacks each word and syntactic unit with extraordinary precision:
- Śrīman Nārāyaṇa: Nārāyaṇa eternally united with Śrī Mahālakṣmī, whose puruṣakāra is inseparable from the act of refuge
- caraṇau śaraṇaṃ prapadye: 'I take the two divine feet as refuge' — the first sentence explicitly states surrender to the Divya Dampati as the upāya
- Śrīmate Nārāyaṇāya: to Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, the inseparable divine couple and the goal of service
- namaḥ: renunciation of independent self-ownership and dedication to Bhagavān's pleasure
- The two sentences together: the first expresses the upāya of śaraṇāgati; the second expresses the upēya of eternal kainkaryam
The Dvaya-prakaraṇam through Maṇavāḷa Māmuni's commentary (Mumukṣuppadi-vyākhyānam) is among the most profound and beloved texts in the Teṅkalai tradition. It is the text recited by prapannas in their daily practice, the text quoted by Āchāryas when teaching prapatti, and the text that more than any other embodies the Teṅkalai theological voice.
The prakaraṇam also addresses the anusandhāna (correct inner practice) of the Dvaya — not merely reciting the words but holding their full meaning as a living reality in each moment: 'I surrender to Śrīmate Nārāyaṇa; I serve Śrīmate Nārāyaṇa forever.'
