Detailed Explanation

Āvani — The Month of Kṛṣṇa's Advent

Āvani is the fifth month of the Tamil solar calendar, spanning mid-August to mid-September. In the Śrī Vaiṣṇava tradition, Āvani is pre-eminently the month of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, as Janmāṣṭami — the celebration of Kṛṣṇa's birth — falls in Āvani on the Aṣṭamī tithi of the Kṛṣṇa-pakṣa. Temples celebrate Kṛṣṇa Jayanti with elaborate decorations, the recitation of the Bhāgavata, and special utsavams through the night.

Āvani Avittam is another major observance of this month, marking the day when Brahmin men renew their sacred thread (yajñopavīta) by performing Upakarma — the ritual commencement of Vedic study. This is one of the most widely observed annual saṃskāras in the Brahmin community, connecting the living tradition to the ancient lineage of Vedic transmission.

For Śrī Vaiṣṇavas, the month of Āvani is also associated with the recitation of the Tiruvāymozhi's Āvani Avittam prabandha passages and the special worship of Perumāḷ in the Kṛṣṇa form. The month bridges the great monsoon season and prepares the devotional calendar for the approach of Purattāsi — the month of Navagraha worship and Śrī Vaiṣṇava Saturday observances.
