Ātma Jñānam

ஆத்ம ஞானம்

Also known as: atma-jnanam, atma-jnana, self-knowledge, knowledge of the soul

Meaning

True self-knowledge — the clear, correct understanding of the individual soul's essential nature: that it is pure consciousness, eternal, and wholly a servant (*śeṣa*) of Bhagavān; foundational to both bhakti and prapatti.

Detailed Explanation

Ātma Jñānam — Knowing What One Actually Is

Ātma jñānam (Sanskrit: ātma = self/soul + jñāna = knowledge; 'knowledge of the self/soul') is the foundational understanding of the individual soul's true nature (svarūpa) — what it is, what it is not, and what its relationship to Bhagavān is.

The Content of Ātma Jñānam: Ātma jñānam in Viśiṣṭādvaita teaches:

  1. The soul is cit (pure consciousness, sentient) — not the body, not the senses, not the mind
  2. The soul is nitya (eternal) — it neither is created nor destroyed
  3. The soul is anu (atomic in size) — distinct from the body and from Bhagavān
  4. The soul is śeṣa (wholly a servant/subordinate) to Bhagavān — its nature is to serve
  5. The soul is vibhu-vyāptā (pervaded/supported) by Bhagavān who is its antaryāmī

The Error Ātma Jñānam Corrects: Without ātma jñānam, the soul mistakes the body for the self (deha-ātma-abhimāna) — thinking 'I am this body', 'I am young/old/male/female', 'I am dying.' This fundamental error is the root of all saṃsāric suffering.

Ātma Jñānam as Prerequisite: The Āchāryas teach that ātma jñānam is indispensable before prapatti. 'One who does not know what the soul is cannot properly understand what liberation means, cannot understand what it means to be Bhagavān's śeṣa, and cannot make an informed surrender.'

Source: True ātma jñānam is received from the Āchārya — because the Vedic texts that describe the soul's nature require correct interpretation, which only the Āchārya-lineage (śiṣya-paramparā) transmits faithfully.
