Āṭi — The Sacred Month of Ādi
Āṭi is the fourth month of the Tamil solar calendar, corresponding roughly to mid-July through mid-August. In the Śrī Vaiṣṇava liturgical year, Āṭi holds a place of exceptional sanctity, marked by a confluence of temple festivals, Āzhvār thirunakshatrams, and auspicious astronomical occasions.
The most celebrated observance of Āṭi is Āṭi Pūram — the Thirunakshatra of Āṇḍāḷ, the only female Āzhvār and the beloved bride of Śrīman Nārāyaṇa. Āṭi Pūram is observed with great splendor at the Śrī Raṅganātha temple in Srirangam and at Śrī Villiputtur, her birthplace, where special utsavams recalling her divine union with Perumāḷ are performed. Devotees recite the Tiruppāvai and Nācciyār Tirumozhi with special fervor on this day.
During Āṭi, the Āṭi Brahmotsavam is celebrated in major Divya Desam temples. The month is also astronomically significant: the Āṭi Amāvāsyā (new moon of Āṭi) is considered especially potent for ancestral rites (pitṛ-tarpana), and the full moon of Āṭi coincides with auspicious nakṣatra configurations. Several other Āzhvār thirunakshatrams fall in Āṭi, making it a month of continuous celebration in Śrī Vaiṣṇava communities.
