அருளாளர் பெருமாள் எம்பெருமானார்

Also known as: aruḷāḷa perumāḷ emperumāṉār, Arulala Perumal Emperumanar, Jnana Sara author, Jnana Sarakarta

Meaning

One of Rāmānuja's foremost disciple-successors who composed the Jñāna Sāram and Pramēya Sāram — two important Maṇipravāḷam works summarizing the essence of Sri Vaishnava teaching.

Detailed Explanation

Disciple and Author

Aruḷāḷa Perumāḷ Emperumāṉār (also called Jñāna Sāra-kartā — the author of Jñāna Sāram) was one of Rāmānuja's principal disciples and a significant teacher in his own right. He composed two celebrated Maṇipravāḷam works — Jñāna Sāram ('Essence of Knowledge') and Pramēya Sāram ('Essence of the Knowable') — that distill the core Sri Vaishnava doctrines into accessible Tamil-Sanskrit prose.

Jñāna Sāram

Jñāna Sāram is a series of 40 verses summarizing the essential knowledge (jñāna) a Sri Vaishnava must possess: the nature of the three tattvas (chit, achit, Brahman), the nature of the jīva's bondage, the means of liberation (especially prapatti), and the nature of the liberated state. It is prized for its clarity and brevity.

Pramēya Sāram

Pramēya Sāram ('Essence of the Known') is a companion work of 40 verses, focusing more on the nature of what must be known (the pramēyas) — Brahman as the Supreme, Lakṣmī's mediating role, the nature of liberation, and related doctrines. Together, Jñāna Sāram and Pramēya Sāram form a convenient catechism of Vishishtadvaita theology.

Legacy

Both texts receive regular commentary and are used in Sri Vaishnava study circles (kalakṣepam). They represent the early post-Rāmānuja tradition's effort to systematize the teaching in Maṇipravāḷam — the blended Tamil-Sanskrit style — making it accessible to the broader devotional community.
