Apauruṣeyam

அபௌருஷேயம்

Also known as: apaurusheya, apauruseya, authorless scripture

Meaning

Not authored by any person — the Vedas are not composed by any human or divine being; they are self-existent, eternal, and authorless, which makes them the most reliable pramāṇam.

Detailed Explanation

Apauruṣeyam — The Authorless Vedas

Apauruṣeyam (Sanskrit: a = not + pauruṣa = of a person + -eya suffix; 'not of/by a person') is the fundamental Vedic doctrine that the Vedas were not composed by any human (puruṣa) or even by any divine being — they are nityam (eternal) and self-existent, having no author.

Why Authorlessness Makes the Vedas Supremely Authoritative: Any knowledge generated by a human or divine being is susceptible to error — the composer may have incomplete knowledge, biases, or may be mistaken. An authorless scripture has no such limitations. 'Because the Vedas have no author, they have no erring intellect behind them and therefore no possibility of error.'

How the Vedas Are Transmitted: If the Vedas have no author, how did they come to be known? The tradition holds that at each cycle of creation, Brahma (the creator deity) receives the Vedas through meditation — they emerge from his contemplation of eternal truths, not from his composition. He is the transmitter, not the author. The Vedas themselves are beginningless.

Apauruṣeyam and Pramāṇam: In Viśiṣṭādvaita epistemology, there are three primary pramāṇas (means of valid knowledge): pratyakṣa (perception), anumāna (inference), and śabda (verbal testimony). The Vedas are the ultimate form of śabda pramāṇam — and their apauruṣeya nature makes them the most reliable of all, transcending the limitations of perception and inference.

Rāmānuja's Defence: Rāmānuja addresses objections to the Vedas' apauruṣeya nature in the Śrī Bhāṣya, establishing that their eternal, self-revealing character is itself testified by the Vedas and consistent with reason.
