Paribhāṣā

Apahata Pāpmā

அபஹத பாப்மா

Also known as: apahata-papma, apahata papma, sin-free Brahman

Meaning

Completely untouched by impurity or sin — one of Bhagavān's essential divine qualities; He is absolutely free from all defects (*doṣa*), karma, and limitation.

Detailed Explanation

Apahata Pāpmā — Absolutely Untouched by Impurity

Apahata Pāpmā (Sanskrit: apahata = driven away/destroyed + pāpmā = sin/impurity; 'one in whom sin is driven away') is a divine quality of Bhagavān described in the Chāndogya Upaniṣad (8.7.1) and is one of the eight qualities (aṣṭa guṇas) of Brahman in the Vedāntic tradition.

Vedic Source: 'Ya ātmā apahata pāpmā vijaro vimṛtyu viśoko vijighatsoapipāsaḥ satya kāmaḥ satya saṅkalpaḥ' (Chāndogya 8.7.1) — 'The Ātmā who is untouched by sin, free from old age, free from death, free from sorrow, free from hunger and thirst, of true desire, of true resolution.' This description in context refers to Paramātmā (Brahman).

Meaning in Viśiṣṭādvaita: Apahata pāpmā means Bhagavān has no karma whatsoever — no past karma, no future karma. His actions arise from pure will (sankalpa) and limitless compassion, not from karmic necessity. This distinguishes Bhagavān from the jīvātmā — 'The jīvātmā's suffering comes from karma; Bhagavān takes avatāra out of compassion, not karma.'

Practical Significance: Because Bhagavān is apahata pāpmā, His grace is untainted by limitation. He can grant liberation to any soul — because He Himself is not constrained by any karmic debt or personal limitation.
