Elder Brother in the Community
Anṇā (Tamil: 'Elder brother') is used within the Śrī Vaiṣṇava community to address men who are senior in age or spiritual standing but close in generation — much as one would address a beloved older brother. The term expresses both respect and warmth.
The Complete Family
The Śrī Vaiṣṇava community's kinship vocabulary includes:
- Anṇā — elder brother
- Akka — elder sister
- Ammā — mother
- Appan — father
- Āyya — respected elder/sir
- Thirukumāran/Thirukumāri — son/daughter
- Adiyēn/Devarēr — self/other in formal interaction
Theological Basis
Using family terms for fellow devotees enacts the doctrine that all Śrī Vaiṣṇavas are members of Bhagavān's parivāra (divine family). The community that worships together, serves together, and receives prasādam together is not merely a religious organization but a genuine spiritual family — bound by the same Lord, the same sampradāya, and the same destination of Vaikuṇṭha.
