Amudhapadi

அமுதுபடி

Also known as: amudhapadi, அமுதுபடி, rice prasadam, annam prasadam, sacred rice, Amudhubadi

Meaning

Rice prasādam — the principal cooked rice offered to Bhagavān as naivedyam and distributed as the foundational prasādam of the sacred meal.

Detailed Explanation

Rice as Ambrosia

Amudhapadi (Tamil: amuthu = nectar/ambrosia + padi = a measure/portion; 'the measure of nectar') is the devotional name for cooked rice when consecrated as prasādam. Rice (annam) is the primary naivedyam in South Indian temple worship — offered at every worship service alongside accompanying dishes.

Anna-Brahman

The Taittirīya Upaniṣad's famous teaching is annaṃ brahma — 'Food is Brahman.' Rice, as the primary sustainer of life, is considered a manifestation of Bhagavān's grace in the most immediate form. When offered back to Bhagavān and received as prasādam, it completes the circle: Brahman (Bhagavān) → rice → offered to Brahman → received back as grace.

Daily Naivedyam

In temples and devout households, cooked rice is the first food item offered at every meal. Before any household member eats, a portion of freshly cooked rice is placed before the household deity as naivedyam. This simple daily act is one of the most fundamental expressions of Sri Vaishnava household devotion.
