The Beautiful Lord's Abode
Azhagar Kōvil ('temple of the beautiful one') houses Sundarārāja Perumāḷ — also called Kāḷḷaḷakar ('the beautiful thief,' a loving name) — at the Kallalagar hills near Madurai in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams and is celebrated in Āzhvār pasurams, particularly by Tirumaṅkai Āzhvār.
The Chithirai Festival
The most famous aspect of Azhagar Kōvil is the annual Chithirai (April-May) festival, during which the processional deity (Kāḷḷaḷakar) descends from the temple on the hill and travels to the Vaigai river bank in Madurai — a journey of several kilometers through villages and the city. Hundreds of thousands of devotees gather to witness and participate. The festival legend connects it to Āṇḍāḷ's wedding — Kāḷḷaḷakar is said to be traveling for the wedding but arrives after Āṇḍāḷ has already been united with the Lord at Śrīraṅgam.
Āzhvār Connection
Tirumaṅkai Āzhvār composed pasurams specifically for this deity, and the Āzhvār Tirunakṣatram celebrations here are particularly vibrant. The setting — a dense forest on a hill, sacred river nearby — makes Azhagar Kōvil one of the most naturally beautiful Divya Desam settings.
The Lord's Beauty
The name Sundarārāja ('king of beauty') and the affectionate title Kāḷḷaḷakar ('beautiful thief' — one who steals the heart) both point to the primary experience of this deity: the overwhelming, joyful beauty of the Lord that captures the devotee's heart as completely as a theft, leaving nothing behind.
